My name is Josh Kelly, and I started at Capita in June 2023 as a Building Control Technical Support Officer, a role which I had previously carried out for a London Local Authority. With five years of industry experience, I was immediately captivated by the sense of belonging at Capita, I knew this would be a company I would remain at for a very long time.
My colleagues at Capita are like a family, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds with open arms. As an openly gay man in the construction industry, I have been treated no differently to anybody else. Some colleagues have even expressed genuine curiosity about my life and partner, fostering closer connections amongst us.
After meeting with the entire Building Control Team, I have developed healthy and happy relationships with my team. Over time, colleagues have confided in me any issues they may have, reflecting the trust we have built together. Within a couple of months of joining Capita, I was honoured to be promoted to Team Leader for the Technical Support Officers, despite having no prior managerial experience and was excited to take the opportunity.
A few months following this new appointment, I was given a second opportunity to lead on the Plan Check Hub. This involved creating trackers, drafting letters, and developing SharePoint sites to ensure efficient operations. As the first point of contact for customer queries, I also oversee the allocation of work to Plan Checkers. I approach this role with ownership and pride, continually looking for ways to improve our ways of working. Soon I will be working along side one of our hyper scalers to create an Automated Plan Checking Service using the functions of AI, a project I am very excited to be part of.
Recently, I have assumed further responsibilities related to the operational aspects of Building Control, including client invoicing, contract renewals and assisting with finance and colleague’s timesheets. Despite my increased responsibilities, Capita’s flexible working arrangements allow me to balance my workload to suit mine and the business needs.
Throughout my journey at Capita, my manager has been incredibly supportive and continues to be a great mentor. They provide me with high level knowledge of the building blocks of a business (a subject I am highly interested in) and guide me through various processes, showing me each step and its rationale.
My experience at Capita has been extremely rewarding and I am enthusiastic about the future. I have never had a job where my hard work is recognised and rewarded. I consider myself incredibly lucky to work at Capita and would recommend working here to anyone. Especially those who are looking for progression in their professional journey.
