A New Year's resolution not to be sniffed at

Ensure your pets have a happy, healthy New Year

At the end of another festive season most of us will accept that, between the turkey and mince pies, we have put on a few extra pounds which we promise to tackle through numerous resolutions. However, if you own a dog or cat, it is likely that you will have noticed them becoming rounder around the edges and it might be time to include them in your 2010 health drive.

According to the RSPCA, it is estimated that around 40 per cent of Britain's pets are overweight and the risks increase around Christmas when there is a danger of overindulging.  Pet obesity can lead to a number of health problems which can subsequently result in an increase in vet bills and pet insurance should be seriously considered.

David Seel, managing director of Thornside pet healthcare insurance, said: “We hear from insurers and veterinarians on a regular basis that the obesity battle amongst pets is still ongoing. Owners may not be endangering their pets’ health intentionally, but providing unsuitable treats which is especially prevalent around Christmas, will inevitably lead to obesity and other health complications. Just like humans, cats and dogs require a balanced diet complemented by regular exercise and what better time to put this into practice than at the beginning of a brand New Year.”

RSPCA pet insurance, administered by Thornside, offers a comprehensive level of cover and a quote can be obtained by visiting www.rspca-pet-insurance.co.uk or calling 0844 335 1532.

Sometimes, being overweight can be attributed to hormonal issues so if you are worried that your pet is putting on weight, remember to consult a veterinarian who can advise you further.
