We have introduced eco-innovative ideas at our Service Birmingham offices
The Government has asked cities to reduce their carbon footprint by 60% by 2050 as part of the UK climate strategy. Capita through it’s joint venture, Service Birmingham, is supporting Birmingham City Council’s aspiration to achieve this target by 2026.
Service Birmingham is working with employees, customers and their local community. The business is leading by example through design and management of its own buildings.
Service Birmingham’s eco-innovations include:
• new buildings have ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ BREEAM ratings
• the wood in all furniture products is sourced from sustainable forests certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes
• server consolidation and server virtualisation
• energy efficient lighting that switches off when areas are unoccupied
• air conditioning efficiency maximisation
• cooling chillers which save more than 2000 tonnes of CO2 over a ten year period
• heat pumps and high thermal efficiency heat recovery units
• acoustic comfort noise management system
• multi functional devices have replaced printers (default double sided printing and draft toner setting)
• showers, lockers and cycle racks enable employees to cycle or run to and from work
• a turfed roof for improved insulation
• wildlife habitat such as bat bricks and bird nesting boxes
Employee participation:
- recycling stations throughout buildings encourage employees to recycle a range of material including paper, plastic, cans and bottles
- use of more flexible working practices reduce the need to travel
- staff shuttle bus services from local train stations to and from work encourage employees to use public transport
