Providing a criminal records service for the Home Office

The CRB provides employers with information to ‘facilitate safer recruitment and protect the vulnerable’. The IT infrastructure we’ve created can process over 70,000 applications a week and issue over 120,000 documents a month. The service issues 99.5% of Standard Disclosures within 10 days, well ahead of the public service standard of 93%.

We continue to develop and modernise the service. In 2005 we implemented, on budget and two weeks early, the Interim Police Cross Reference service. This free standing database pulls together over 54m records from 43 police forces, central government files and the Police National Computer, and offers recruiters a significantly greater degree of security. In 2006 we installed the CRB’s new e-platform, and launched its first electronic service – Online Tracking. This has proved a success, logging over 600,000 enquiries a month.

The CRB has demonstrated its satisfaction by introducing a new governance structure that cements the partnership with Capita and gives us a key role in the service’s future strategy.
